A visit from the British Heritage Centre

What a marvellous morning with motors!

Y3 and Mrs Adams had a very enjoyable morning building and racing Lego cars complete with drivers and steering wheels! We learnt about the forces which act on cars whilst they are in motion. We designed our own cars by considering the best size for the wheels, and the weight and the shape that the car should be. The race was on! Each car had to run down a slope negotiating different surfaces and then speed across the floor. The car that travelled the furthest, won. We then built gears to make our cars move even faster!

Getting ready for Christmas...

On Thursday, the scary Saxons from year 3 spent the morning with the vicious Vikings from year 4 and enjoyed a very civilised game of “reindeer drive” in the hall. There was no animosity between the two as they worked together in teams of four to try and make their reindeer. Year 3 had three winners in total! After break there was more fun and games in the Year 4 classroom with pass the parcel, after which the children enjoyed their Christmas lunch.

Diwali

Diwali 1

Religious Education – Focus on the Hindu festival of Diwali

With incense burning and Indian music playing in the background, Year 3 have been learning all about the colourful Hindu festival of Diwali, also known as the festival of light. The children have looked at the story of Rama and Sita and written letters to Hanuman thanking him for helping Rama save Sita from the evil demon King Ravana who had kidnapped her. Having rescued Sita, Rama and Hanuman were guided safely back home with her by little lights called “divas” which signify light triumping over dark and goodness over evil.

Joe, Emily, James and Molly convincingly acted out the story of Rama and Sita in front of the whole school during assembly having spent a PE lesson on Diwali and Indian dance with Mrs Kempton. Art also had a Diwali theme creating beautiful and intricate mhendhi  patterns which are traditionally used to decorate the skin during festivals and wedding celebrations.

The children have thoroughly enjoyed the colourful classroom display, Indian artwork and dancing this term!

Anglo-Saxons Displays

The Bayeux tapestry tells the story of the Battle of Hastings (according to the Normans!) and Year 3 have been carefully studying the images whilst painting them during art. Having painted them so beautifully, they have then written captions in neat, joined up writing to explain what is happening in each picture.

Saxon Cooking

Under Mrs. Keyte's watchful eye, Year 3 tried their hand at some cooking... Saxon style! Our bean-cakes were delicious and are now helping us to understand how to write instructions.

Hrothgar's visit

We had a wonderful day learning all about the Saxons from Hrothgar. From their weapons of war, to fire-lighting and Saxon stories (with the children as the characters!), we learnt so much about this fascinating period of history.

This is the creative overview for Year 3. However, as the term develops and the children’s interest broadens, this document is subject to change.
