Oxford Museum - Romans Workshop
On Wednesday 18 th November, we went to the Oxfordshire Museum in Woodstock to take part in a Romans workshop. We had lots of fun and learnt lots of new facts. We made our own mosaic pictures based on the Stonesfield tapestry. Stonesfield used to have a Roman villa with a mosaic floor. The tapestry is a copy of the mosaic floor.
We took it in turns to dress up as rich and poor Romans meanwhile other groups were learning about how the Romans built roads. There were three groups running at the same time, one of them went to the gallery to study Roman objects found locally. We felt very happy when we came home knowing that we had learnt a lot of facts. We found it interesting in the money section when we learnt about Roman forgery of coins. We liked the skeleton of the Roman person and found it interesting that it’s head was cut off and put at it’s feet because the Romans believed that would release the person’s soul. They left seven coins in the person’s mouth to pay the ferry man of the Underworld.
We’d like to thank Fabia’s mum, Ellie’s mum, Axel’s mum, Mrs Tomalin and Miss Stephens for coming on the trip.

Our Visit to Chedworth Roman Villa
On Friday 25 th September, Year 4 helped by Mr Beere and Mr Powley went to Chedworth Roman Villa to learn about how the Romans lived. Whilst they were there, they had a guided tour, handled artefacts such as pottery, bones, nails and mosaic tiles and even dressed up as slaves! As slaves, they had to grind up herbs and spices to use in a medicinal potion! A good day was had by all!
“I liked the pretty mosaic floors in the dining room.”
Lucy
“I enjoyed dressing up and making the herbal infusion bags because they told us a lot about the slaves jobs.”
